The emerging technology of 3D printing is changing so many facets in human existence that it was only a matter of time before it crept into the sex toy industry. In theory, you could make any kind of implement you want to enhance the pleasures of sex.

Makers and users of 3D printed sex toys need to make a few precautions first. The kind of plastic used in 3D printing is often hard and brittle. The 3D printing process itself, layer by layer, creates microscopic gaps which is hardly suitable to insert in one’s orifice without preparation. Some experiments have gotten around this by creating dildo molds on the 3D printer and the pouring flexible silicone into it. Another idea is to use a silicone spray to coat the resulting object.

Certainly at some point we will discover a way to print 3D sex toys out of a suitable material so that the creation process can be done in one step. While few people are going to buy a 3D printer just for creating dildos and such, a lot of people will have such appliances in their homes for the making of a wide variety of household objects, such as spare parts, tools, and art. Certainly sex toys will be one of the many things people will be able to make at home, without recourse to going to a sex shop or buying online.

That suggests a future in which the sex toy industry will gradually move away from physical products to digital designs that can be sold and downloaded from the Internet.  In that eventuality, the sex toy industry will have to adapt.
