While most people know that adult entertainment is a thriving industry, they might not know that it’s also responsible for some of the biggest technological successes in society. Everything from the VCR to DVDs, digital cameras to credit cards owes thanks to the adult industry for becoming as mainstream as it is today. With that said it seems like a new technology might be receiving the backing of the adult industry, and it’s one that seems a little more sci-fi than most would think.

That’s right, 3D printers are going to be the next big thing at least partially because of the adult industry.

3D Printing Your Own Sex Toys

The ability to print 3D sex toys might sound juvenile at first glance. After all this is a technology straight out of Star Trek, why would you use it for sex toys?

There are a lot of reasons, actually; privacy, cost, simplicity, and time. At present if someone wants to buy a sex toy that person has to either go out to a store and make a purchase, or buy a toy online and wait for it to be shipped. Both methods require time, and they might engender some embarrassment on the part of the purchaser. After all sex toys are something private, and not everyone wants to advertise their private affairs quite so readily. Not only that, but even the most basic sex toys can be pretty pricey. 3D printing has the capacity to solve all of these problems.

A 3D printer is a big up-front cost, there’s no denying that. If someone already has the printer and the material for it though then using it to print sex toys represents a savings in cost over the retail price of most sex toys (barring those with massagers and other embedded pieces). Not only is it a cost savings (particularly with the ever-lowering price of 3D printers), but printing one’s own sex toys allows that person to customize the toys to his or her specifications. Designs can be downloaded and printed quickly, and there’s no need to avoid a cashier’s eyes at any point in the process.

Will this be the next step in technological evolution? It’s hard to say with certainty, but practically every other area has explored 3D printing. The adult entertainment industry might just be what brings 3D printers from the manufacturing floor and into the home.
