Interview with Shape Master

Hello Shape Master, thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Tell us a bit about yourself and your work. How did you get into 3D design?

I have been working with CAD modeling and 3D printers since 1997. I am a product designer and have been designing consumer products for traditional manufacturing methods for over 18 years.

How did you hear about and what made you decide to register as a sex toy creator?

I had recently gained personal access to a 3D printer and had always wanted to explore printing sex toys. I thought it would be great to make exactly what I want. I could never use the company’s 3D printer for this (imagine an engineering manager walking through and seeing my girlfriend’s future butt plug in the machine). So when I gained personal access to a machine, I started doing some online research. I found SexShop3D through a google search and thought it was a wonderful service. I took inspiration from what I saw and decided that I could make some items that others might enjoy.

How do you approach sex toy design? What is your creative process like?

I start out by looking at existing toys and think about how they could be more fun, functional or stylish. Then I sketch pictures before I begin modeling them in 3D. I like to print out a full scale, orthographic view in 2D before finalizing the part and trying a 3D print. It is amazing what you can learn from the 2D print. It is hard to judge size and scale on a large computer monitor.

And finally, how do you see the future of this concept? Will 3D printing of our own pleasure products change the sex toy industry?

I have seen 3D printing come a long way. When I first used it, it was very expensive and only the largest corporations could use it in their prototyping process. Over time it became accessible to smaller companies for prototyping purposes but it still wasn’t a reasonable consumer item. With the costs dropping and availability growing, I see more and more hobbyists and makers being able to explore new ideas. This will lead to very creative new sex toys. When people make the things they want and don’t have to settle for the items available in stores, they come up with new ideas. Sex toy manufacturers are only able to create and sell a limited number of products and the development time can be very long. This limits the number of concepts they can share with the world. Sites like SexShop3D don’t have the limitations of a sex toy manufacturer so it will become an incubator for new and creative toys.

Thanks so much to Shape Master for sharing his thoughts and giving us an insight into his world.
