Adult Industry and Technology: Is Porn Driving Innovation?

Tom Sancelot Adult Industry Leave a Comment

We all know that the adult industry and technology have a pretty cozy relationship today. Between the Internet, digital cameras, and even DVD technology, porn has had a big influence on our entertainment as a whole. But did you know that it can also be credited with the spread of literature, and the success of books as a form of mass-market media?

Virtual Reality porn

It’s no surprise that porn influenced a lot of the 20th century technology, it was a time of sexual liberation after all. The accessibility of porn on VHS killed the Betamax, and when porn started using Blu-Rays it killed HD DVD’s. The military created the Internet but it’s porn that drove video streaming, tracking devices and online transactions. Porn’s biggest contribution to the Internet? Bandwidth growth! Virtual reality porn is already a billion dollar market today.

But what about earlier technology? What was porn’s influence on 15th century’s technology?

The Pornographic Printing Press

We’ve all heard the story of Gutenberg’s great invention. He sank a huge amount of time, effort, and personal fortune into the gamble to create the first printing press with movable type, allowing books to be printed en masse for the first time in history. And, of course, Gutenberg’s first offering to the masses looking for a reason to become literate was the bible.

Illustration from the book I Modi

It was the second offering, though, that made printing take off into the stratosphere. That book was titled I Modi, which means The Ways, and it was written by Pietro Aretino, and Giulio Romano. The book was a combination of professional wrestling and hardcore pornography, and it had the interior illustrations to put it in high demand.

Aretino, widely considered the father of erotic literature as we know it, is the one who put the boot in to publishing, and who helped elevate the fledgling business of mass-produced books.

Once reading became something that everyone could participate in, and the technology for printing disseminated, we saw the industry begin to take steps as it grew into the giant we know today.

We saw that porn is not creating technology but is often leading the application side of it, making it or killing it.

Will the Adult Industry Drive Home 3D Printing Too?

We saw people buying their first 3D printer and coming right to our website and purchase 3D sex toy designs. There are people interested in the concept sending us emails asking what kind of printer they should get to make sex toys. We strongly believe the adult entertainment industry is already impacting 3D printing technology. To what extent? Only time will tell, we sure have more than one trick in our sleeve.

Check out our series of  interviews with designers to see what they have to say about 3D printing taking over the sex toy market.
